A painting a day keeps the blues away ……
Joel was born in Plattsburgh, NY and grew up in Clayton, NY. He graduated from Clayton Central School, where his father was Principal for 17 years.
After graduation from Syracuse University in 1964, the began teaching tenth grade English at Camillus Central School. After a year and a half he left the teaching profession to become an insurance adjuster with the Insurance Company of North America. He joined the Army Reserve, and after six years was honorably discharged as an E5, after which he left INA to join Perry and Swartwood, Inc., in Elmira, NY as an agent. Active in Boy Scouting for 25 years, and Rotary for 20 years, Joel holds the BSA Silver Beaver award, and the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow award. He has been married to Carol Ticknor for 56 years, and he and Carol have two children and five grandchildren.
Retired to Tucson, AZ, for some years, Joel took up acting, directing, painting and building sets for several Tucson theater companies. He has continued painting and has sold his work, mostly depicting 1000 Islands scenes A published author, he has ghost written four novellas, a novel, an autobiographical series of essays about growing up on the river and many articles for the Thousand Islands Sun. He was photographer for the Clayton Central School yearbook, and has been a photographer ever since high school. His favorite subject is the St. Lawrence River and surrounding area.
Carol and Joel live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and visit Clayton and the Thousand Islands every year when possible.
