John Scarlett of Rossie, NY
Blacksmith, Oxen teamster, teacher and poet.
John Scarlett, Little Tree Farm Rossie NY. John produced maple syrup in the old fashioned way using oxen to pull the sleigh. He is also an ornamental blacksmith having worked at Colonial Williamsburg. In May, 2012 North Country Public Radio conducted an interview with John which is fascinating listening. That day he was working on a sculpture of Asian poppies, forged out of steel and copper.
The Rossie Blast furnace was the first furnace erected in Northern New York, 1813. For years Iron ore was produced there from 1812 to 1853. I always thought John would have gone exploring there in the ruins. W.L.S.
“If you did not meet me at any point in your life or mine, then no list of memberships or awards or good deeds will bring you closer. A list of my mistakes and failures and missed opportunities would be more revealing. If you did know me as friend or relative, you know more than words can summarize. Fie on you airy obit.”
