For over thirty years, I have been teaching students that making Art is like telling a story. My stories have often been about the environment, animals, heritage and community. Once very detailed, it has become a challenge to simplify my work into the symmetrical form of a barn quilt. It is fascinating to be forced into this structure. I am now using radial space and repetition to convey messages. Symbolic color is often used, too. Making a barn quilt is like creating a Haiku poem. Each one tells a story, but the viewer is going to have to look deeper to find it.
