When John Miller III saw his first souvenir paddle, he was intrigued by its history and beauty. Miniature paddles have been handmade in the North Country for over 100 years. Combining his interest in the history of the Thousand Islands and the Adirondacks with his training as a portrait and landscape painter, John Miller III started Thousand Island Picture Paddles in 1995. Each 22-inch paddle is hand made and painted. Reflecting the region’s rich history, he likes to paint Rushton canoes and sailboats, lighthouses and local wildlife. Miller also makes custom order paddles depicting people’s boats or summer cottages. Using local hard woods such as oak, ash, maple and cherry, John Miller sells his paddles all over the world. He is also available for demonstrations.
